I’m one of those who work from home so being put together isn’t much of a concern for me as I do not have to worry about that every single day, but on the odd day when I have to step into the office or have a face-to-face meeting, I make that extra effort to make myself look like I spent time planning to look good. One one side though, I’m not someone who likes to spend a lot of time getting ready, (those at home may say otherwise, though) but I like to be there well put together and there are some habits I’ve picked up in order to look put together with the minimum amount of effort or strain possible. They’re just simple little habits that, when all put and mixed together, makes me look like I stepped out of Mo Abudu’s wardrobe!
This is really for people who are not big on taking any more precious time getting ready in the morning or any other time. Much as you may not have enough time every single day to put into your looks, you must understand that looking ‘pulled together’ is as essential as any other form of communication you consider to be more important.
I’m not saying we should obsess about our looks for the benefit of other people. Being “put together” isn’t about appearing a certain way (whatever look it happens to be that you’re going for) for any audience; It’s about feeling a certain way. When your physical being is tidy and organized there’s an undeniable mirror effect projected onto your overall mental state. In other words, we strive to look put together physically so that we might possibly feel put together mentally, and then we can go out and conquer those hurdles that life throws out in front of us.
What I’m trying to say is it doesn’t always take a village(unless you’re a celebrity) to turn out good. Looking put together isn’t as much of a task as you might think it is.
That being said, here are some tips to get you going. Every good thing which we decide to make a part of our lives is done by turning them into habits.
- Polished skin and groomed brows.
Even if you have only five minutes to get ready, it’s worth spending them on your skin and eyebrows. Make sure you have a great moisturizer and a proper skin care routine. If your eye makeup looks great and you’re wearing a beautiful lip color but your eyebrows are sparse and your skin is uneven, you won’t look put together. That’s how important your brows are, you can look all good and neat from head to toe, but if your brows are all over the place, your whole look has been tainted! Even if you’re not into makeup, you can fill in your eyebrows. It’s so easy and fast, and can really change the way your face looks and make everything look more put-together. It sounds so simple, but eyebrows can make such a big difference! If you have no idea what you’re doing, make an appointment to get them shaped. Make sure to groom your eyebrows every other week, but don’t over pluck them. Fill in any sparse areas with an eyebrow pencil or powder and use a brow gel to fix the hairs in place. If you already have full eyebrows that do not require filling them in, just use the eyebrow gel to tame unruly hairs and give them a more polished look.
Give your skin a fresh, healthy look by using a moisturizer that suits your skin type and a foundation or tinted moisturizer that matches your skin tone. Conceal any redness and pigmentation and use a brightening concealer under your eyes. If time is not an issue, add a touch of highlighter on the high points of your face: cheekbones, brow bones, bridge of the nose and Cupid’s bow.
- Wear a bold lip (preferably red).
A bold lip color, especially a red lip, is a quick way to look glammed up, even if the rest of the makeup look is minimal. After you find the perfect shade of red that suits your face, it becomes your secret weapon to looking great in a minute. However, in order to look put together you want to make sure the color is applied well, with your lip contour nicely defined and the color looking even.
Women in meticulously-applied red lipstick always look so in control to me. With barely there makeup on your face, bold lipstick makes several statements: “I am here,” “I know I am here,” and “I cared enough about being here that I made my lips look this hot.” Bright lipstick is an easy way to make an entrance without spending a great deal of time or effort. For the minute it takes to apply, it will bring back put togetherness upon you 100 fold! That extra touch is what it takes to make all the difference.
- Groom your nails.
You could look killer from head-to-toe but with chipped nail polish, your look is instantly killed. Avoid this at all costs.
Brittle nails and dry cuticles can ruin your entire look and make you sloppy, no matter how well curated every other detail of your look is. Well-painted nails always add a beautiful touch that will make you look put together, but if you don’t like painting your nails or if you simply don’t have time for it, make sure to at least keep your nails short and clean and keep your cuticles moisturized. Apply a good cuticle balm at night before bed, which will eliminate the need for doing it when you are in a rush.
- Pair sleek heels with an understated outfit.
There’s something so amazing about the way you can put on a killer pair of heels and instantly feel more confident. It’s so magical. A pair of jeans and a shirt can be transformed just by that: A hot pair of heels! Thank us later.
- Slip on a pair of sunnies.
I do this all the time especially when running errands- No time for makeup? Shield your “sleepy eyes” with a pair of your favourite sunglasses and the issue is instantly resolved! We also suggest having emergency sunnies in your purse at all times; better safe than sorry, ladies. This is one habit you’ll be glad you started.
- When in doubt, wear black!
Black is the new black. I can say that again! If you’ve had your sense of style on lockdown for a while, you’ll be nodding right now- Black on black on black on black. All black everything. Black shoes, black tights, black skirt, black jeans, black t-shirt, black sweater, black blazer. If you’re a normal person, you probably have some variation on all of these in your wardrobe. Black instantly makes you look cool, and wearing lots of black is the simplest way to look sophisticated but like you didn’t try too hard to look that sophisticated. If it’s taking too much of your precious time to put an outfit together, a black dress, black top and pants with rich accessories can make you look your chic-est!
